Spud Webb is an American retired basketball player, best known for winning a slam dunk contest despite being one of the shortest basketball players in the ‘National Basketball Association’ (NBA). Spud was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in poor conditions. He became interested in playing basketball when he was a kid. Although he faced a lot of difficulties due to his short height, he used that to his advantage. His short stature gave him the benefit of being quick. He was also a high jumper, which somehow helped him start his basketball career while he attended ‘Wilmer-Hutchins High School.’ He was on the junior varsity team there. However, he proved that he was destined for much bigger things when he scored an average of 26 points per game for the varsity team. Midland College coach, Jerry Stone, was the only scholarship offer for Spud. In 1983, Spud played basketball at North Carolina State under the Infamous coach, Jim Valvano. After college, Spud had a 12 year NBA Career with the Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic. During his ‘NBA’ career, he averaged 9.9 points per game. He won the ‘NBA Slam Dunk’ contest in Dallas in 1986, making national headlines due to the unexpectedly amazing feat.
Spud Webb was from a close knit family where strong convictions, hard work, and integrity were the cornerstone principles in shaping the fiber of his being. He stood on the shoulders of talented and gifted family members from his father, David Webb Sr. Spud looked for inspiration and found out that basketball was something that he loved; however his family and friends were always hopeful and excited about his future. The family knew that his small frame was the biggest roadblock in his journey to the NBA.
Not disheartened by this, Spud worked hard to use his biggest “drawback” as his core strength and worked on his speed and accuracy. He tried to enter the school basketball team for the first time in seventh grade, but he was rejected and was told that he was too short to play with the other kids. He kept practicing and slowly improved his skills, which somehow earned him a place on the basketball team when he was in junior high. One big reason behind his selection was the absence of two regular players on the team.
Spud surprised everyone as he scored 22 points in his first game. He was 5 feet 3 inches tall at that time, and his dunking abilities caught everyone’s attention. With some good performances to his name, he entered ‘Wilmer-Hutchins High School,’ where he once again faced the same issue, his height. He was put on the junior varsity team during his high-school years, where he exceeded everybody’s expectations and scored an average of 26 points per game.
Spud Webb currently serves as President of Basketball Operations for the Texas Legends, and continues to serve his Wilmer-Hutchins Community. Spuds Jersey was retired for a second time during the halftime of the Wilmer-Hutchins versus Lincoln game on 01/26/2022 to a sold out crowd.
